Suicide Prayer
A short, Scripture-shaped theme prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, I come to You with a heavy heart. The thought of ending my life has come more than once in recent weeks. The plan is sometimes near at hand. I cannot tell anyone in person yet, so I am telling You.
You know Elijah wanted to die under the broom tree. He was not a coward. He was exhausted. He had run far. You sent him food, sleep, and Your quiet voice. Father, send me that same care today in some form. Feed me. Let me sleep without shame. Bring a person I can phone — a counselor, a pastor, a friend who will not be afraid of the truth.
The enemy shouts that nobody would notice if I were gone. That voice is lying. My life is not mine to end; it is Yours to keep. Hold me through the next hour. Hold me through the next call.
You have said that weeping may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning. I hold onto that promise now. Help me wait for the morning You have promised.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
Verses to pray
Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”
1 Kings 19:4
