Suffering Prayer
A short, Scripture-shaped theme prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Romans 5:3-4 — we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.
Father, I would rather skip the hard parts. Rejoicing in suffering does not come naturally. It comes only when I trust what You are doing in it.
The suffering I am in right now is real. Do not waste it. Hold my pain in Your hand. Bring me to You in prayer with it, not away from You. Walk me through it step by step.
Produce endurance in me. Then character. Then hope. In that order. Do not let me come out of this the same as I went in.
Use this pain. It has cost me too much to leave me where it found me.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
