Prayer Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped theme prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, I do not know how to pray very well. Even the disciples asked You to teach them, and that gives me courage to ask the same thing. Teach me to pray. Take away my need to compose the right words or perform for anyone. You would rather have my honest, simple asking than polished words that are not real. When my words run out, Your Spirit prays through me with groans too deep for words, and that is enough. Help me come to You more often, with fewer words and a simpler heart. I will start with the prayer You already gave us. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. When he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”
    Luke 11:1
