Marriage Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped theme prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Genesis 2:24 — therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Father, the becoming is not finished on the wedding day. The merge is slow. It takes decades. It takes thousands of small surrenders on both sides. We are still becoming.

Some weeks, I forget this is still in progress. I treat the marriage like a finished thing that ought to run by itself. Then it doesn't, and I am surprised. Forgive that.

Help me hold fast. The holding is mine to do. The work of unity is mine to participate in.

Bless my spouse today in ways I cannot see. Bless our home. Make the one flesh a real and quiet fact across the next many years.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
