Theme

Idolatry Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped theme prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the idols in my life are not statues. They are quieter than that. The career that has become my identity. The relationship I lean on too much. The retirement plan I trust more than You. The phone I check like a god. Each one is a small altar I bow to without even saying so. Tear them down. Not because they are bad things, but because they have grown too big. Only You should be that big. Put them back in their place. Take the seat that belongs to You alone. Let the good things stop being rivals and become good things again, as long as You are at the center. Keep me from idols today, especially the ones I do not even see. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
