Ten Commandments Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You spoke the ten words that still stand.

No other gods. No idols. Do not take Your Name in vain. Keep the Sabbath. Honor Your parents. Do not kill. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not covet.

These ten are still the floor under any good life. The first four teach me how to love You. The last six teach me how to love my neighbor. Together, they show me what a whole life looks like.

Do not let me treat them like old rules from long ago. They are not old. They are still true. Plant them deep in me again.

The first commandment is the hardest. Have no other gods before You. When I keep that one, the others follow. When I let it go, the others fall too.

Hold me to the first. Hold me to all ten.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
