Sacrifice Of Isaac Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You told Abraham to take his son, his only son, Isaac, the boy he loved, and offer him on the mountain. That command must have broken his heart. The promise of a future nation was wrapped up in that one boy. It looked like the promise was being undone. But Abraham went. He saddled the donkey at dawn. He climbed the mountain. He laid the wood. He raised the knife. Then Your voice stopped him. A ram appeared in the thicket. You provided. Father, the Isaac in my life, the precious thing I have been holding too tightly, is on the altar now. I do not know whether You will give it back to me. Abraham did not know either, until Your voice spoke. Make me willing to accept either answer. You are the God who provided the ram in the thicket. You are the God who later did not spare Your own Son. Help me to trust You with what I love most. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
    Genesis 22:13
  2. They came to the place which God had told him of. Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on the wood.
    Genesis 22:9
