Reconciliation Of Jacob And Esau Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Jacob prepared gifts. He divided his camp. He wrestled all night and limped into the meeting expecting his brother's anger. Instead, Esau ran to him. They held each other and wept. Genesis 33:4. Father, the reconciliation I have dreaded often goes better than the long imagining of it. I have feared meetings with estranged family that, when finally held, turned into hugs and tears rather than fights. The other person had also been doing years of work I could not see. Soften the hearts on both sides of my long-postponed reconciliations. Send me to the meeting prepared, like Jacob, but with hope that the other person has also been changing in Your hand. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
