Rebuilding The Altar Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the people who came back from exile built the altar first. Before the temple walls. Before anything else. They were afraid. Their neighbors did not want them there. But they set the altar up anyway. Worship came first. The temple took years. The altar took a day. Father, put worship back at the start of my life. Not as something I add at the end. Not as decoration. As the foundation. When I am afraid of what people think, help me worship You first. Let the first act of every new season be this: I come to You. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. In spite of their fear because of the peoples of the surrounding lands, they set the altar on its base; and they offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh, even burnt offerings morning and evening.
    Ezra 3:3
