Massacre Of The Innocents Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord, the Christmas story is not all carols and starlight. When the Christ child came, other children in Bethlehem lost their lives. Their parents wept while Your family fled to Egypt. That sorrow is still with us today. Comfort the parents who have lost children to violence, to disease, to accidents that should not have happened. You came as a child. You know what it costs to be small in a hard world. Hold the parents who weep. Avenge the innocents in Your time. Be near the families today who carry losses the world is too busy to notice. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent out and killed all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding countryside, from two years old and under, according to the exact time which he had learned from the wise men.
    Matthew 2:16
  2. Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.”
    Matthew 2:13
