Judah And Tamar Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, in the story of Judah and Tamar, things went wrong in every direction. Judah did not do right by her. Tamar was treated unfairly and took a desperate path. When she held up Judah's own staff and signet, he saw what he had done. He said, "She is more righteous than I." That confession was quick and honest. Father, make me someone who can say those words when they are true. When I am wrong, do not let me hide it. Give me the courage to admit it, even when it costs me. You work through broken people and messy stories. Work in me. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

  2. She took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.
