Jobs Suffering Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Job came into this world with nothing, and he left it with nothing. He lost his animals, his servants, and all his children in a single day. And still he said, "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord." He did not know why. He had no answers. He only had You.

The worst weeks of my life have looked a little like Job's first chapter. The bad news comes all at once. The why has no answer. Father, give me Job's first response. Let me bless Your name even when I do not understand.

And if the answer is long in coming, sustain me through the silent chapters in between. You restored Job in the end, but not always in this life. Sometimes the restoration is the next one. Either way, blessed be Your name.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
