Jacob Wrestling God Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You came to Jacob in the dark and wrestled with him until dawn. You touched his hip, and he walked with a limp for the rest of his life. You also gave him a new name. I want both, in that order. Not just the easy answer, but the real encounter that leaves a mark. I have wrestled with You only halfway, long enough to get what I wanted, but not long enough to be changed. Wrestle me longer. Touch what needs to be touched, even if it means I walk differently after. I will not let go until You bless me. Bless me with the limp that shows the wrestling was real, and the name that tells me who I have become.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
