Jacob And Esau’s Birthright Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of red stew. He was tired and hungry, and he traded something that lasted forever for one meal. And I have done the same thing. I have traded the good of marriage for one selfish night. I have traded a faithful friend for a piece of gossip that felt good to say. I have traded the weight of glory for an hour of mindless scrolling. Forgive me. In Christ, You have given me a birthright that cannot be taken away. Help me not to sell it for something cheap. When I am hungry, and the trade is right in front of me, give me patience. Help me wait. Help me choose what lasts. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
