Isaac And Abimelech Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Isaac re-dug the wells his father Abraham had dug. The Philistines had filled them in, but Isaac cleared them out and gave them back their old names.

That is often my work too. The faith practices my parents kept have fallen out of use. The hymns the church once sang are forgotten. The good habits of following You have been filled in with sand.

Make me a well-digger. Help me restore what was lost. The old wells still hold sweet water. I do not always need something new.

Clear out what has been buried. Let me pass the water on to the next generation, with the same old names.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham. He called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
    Genesis 26:18
