Golden Calf Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father,

Aaron took the gold and shaped a calf. The people said, "This is the god who brought us out of Egypt." Moses was still on the mountain. The wait was too long. So they made a god they could see.

I do the same thing.

When You feel far away, I grab what I can see. I run to money. I run to comfort. I run to quick answers. I make small gods that feel safe and easy to hold.

But You are not small. You are not easy. You are holy and true.

Smash the calves in my life. Tear down the things I hold instead of You. Take away my need for quick fixes and easy answers.

Teach me to wait for You even when it takes longer than I want. Even when I cannot see what You are doing.

You are worth the wait.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. He received what they handed him, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it a molded calf. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”
    Exodus 32:4
  2. When the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.”
    Exodus 32:1
