Gethsemane Prayer
A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Lord Jesus, You prayed in the garden while the disciples slept. You asked the Father if it could be to let the cup pass from You. Your sweat was like drops of blood. The prayer was real. The giving in was real.
You did not pretend to want the cup. You asked for it to pass. Then You yielded. Not as I will, but as You will. The cup did not pass. You drank it for me.
Lord, when my own cups do not pass, help me to pray like that. Pray honestly. Yield finally. You sent an angel to strengthen You in the garden. Send that same strength to me.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
Verses to pray
Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.
He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire.”
Matthew 26:39
