Gadarene Demoniac Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord Jesus, a man once said, "My name is Legion, for we are many." He lived among the tombs. He cut himself with stones. No chain could hold him. The whole region was afraid of him.

You crossed the sea to set one man free. You delivered him. The demons went into the swine, and the swine rushed off the cliff.

The worst part is what happened next. The townspeople came out and asked You to leave. They wanted their pigs more than they wanted that man healed. They wanted things to stay the way they were.

Lord, save the people of our day from whatever Legion has taken up residence in them. Save the rest of us from choosing what is safe over what is right. Save us from preferring the pigs to the person.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
