Dinah And The Shechemites Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Genesis 34 is a hard chapter. Dinah was assaulted. Her brothers Simeon and Levi struck back with lies and killed every man in Shechem. Jacob was angry — not because they defended their sister, but because he was afraid of what the neighbors would think. Evil sits on every side of this story, and no one in it did what was right. Have mercy on Dinah. Have mercy on every woman who has been assaulted and whose family responded badly. Restrain the vengeance that turns one wrong into many. Heal the survivors. Bring real justice where there has been none. Raise up people who will defend the hurting the right way. Do not let silence be the last word. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
