Daniel And The Diet Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Daniel was just a boy in a strange land. The king's food was set before him, but he chose not to eat it. He asked for vegetables instead. He stayed faithful in a small thing. And that small faithfulness carried him through the lion's den years later. God, the small choices I make today are not small. What I watch, what I read, what I eat, what I say yes to — these shape who I become. Help me be faithful in the small things. Help me say no when I need to say no. Help me say yes to You when it would be easier to say yes to something else. Make me like Daniel — faithful at the table so I can be faithful in the hard place. I do not want to wait for the big test to start being faithful. Start with me now, in the ordinary things. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank. Therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
    Daniel 1:8
