Calming The Storm Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord Jesus, You were asleep on a cushion in the back of the boat while the disciples bailed water and panicked. You woke up and spoke two words to the wind and the sea — Peace. Be still. And the storm stopped at once. Then You asked them, Why are You so afraid? Do You still have no faith? That story has been a comfort to me in the smaller storms of my own life. The Christ in the back of the boat is asleep, not gone. The storms are real but not final. The two words are still available. Speak them over my life. The disciples did not need to be so afraid, because the Lord of the wind was in their boat with them. You are in mine. When the weather is bad, keep me from doubting that You are here. Save me from fear that forgets who is in the boat with me. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
