Beheading Of John The Baptist Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Mark 6:27 says the king sent a soldier to bring John's head. A birthday party, a dance, a careless oath, and the greatest of the prophets was killed in a dungeon. John's death is one of the hardest stories to hold when I want to believe You make all things work out bright and easy. He had baptized the Messiah. He had announced the kingdom. He was sitting in a dark prison while Jesus' work was just getting started, and his life ended because a weak king could not say no in front of his guests. The man who had lived in the wilderness eating locusts ended up in a back room with no one watching. Lord, the deaths of Your faithful people are not always public wins. Some happen in lonely cells. Some happen too soon. But John's witness was not made smaller by the way he died. He had finished what You sent him to do — to point to the Lamb of God. May my own end, whenever it comes and whatever the place, find me also having finished what You sent me to do. Amen.
