Ascension Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the disciples watched Jesus rise into heaven. A cloud took Him from their sight. Two men in white stood there and asked why they were staring into the sky. The ascension had happened. Now there was work to do. You did not leave us with nothing. The risen Lord sat down at Your right hand. You sent the Spirit. You gave us a job to do while we wait. Make me a Christian who looks up and looks down in the right way. Help me look up enough to remember that Jesus is ruling at Your right hand. Help me look down enough to see the work You have placed before me. The same Jesus who went up will come back. Until then, the work is here. Send Your Spirit again for the next mile of it. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
