Ananias And Sapphira Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord, Ananias and Sapphira sold a piece of land and pretended to give all of it to You. They kept some back but lied and said it was the whole amount. Peter said Satan had filled their hearts to lie to the Holy Spirit. They both fell dead. The whole church was filled with fear, and that fear was right.

Lord, this story shakes me because pretending is so easy. I can look generous on the outside while holding back on the inside. I can say one thing and live another. The reputation of giving is not the same as the real thing.

Save me from the Ananias-instinct. Make me give what I say I give. Make me claim what I actually claim. Make me represent what I actually am. The Holy Spirit cannot be deceived. Stop me from trying.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
