Abraham And Abimelech Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped bible story prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Abraham told Abimelech that Sarah was his sister. It was only half true. He was scared. He lied to protect himself and put her at risk. That story is honest. It shows that the people in Scripture were not perfect heroes. They were flawed, and You still worked through them. Father, I have told small lies to protect myself, too. They are the same kind. Please cure me of them. In this story, Abimelech, the pagan king, acted with more honor than Abraham. He listened to You in a dream and sent Sarah home unharmed. Sometimes people who do not know You show more honesty than I do. Let that not be true of me. Give me the courage to tell the whole truth, even when it costs me something. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Didn’t he tell me, ‘She is my sister’? She, even she herself, said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands.”
    Genesis 20:5
  2. Abraham said about Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
    Genesis 20:2
