Parable

Parable Of The Vine And Branches Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped parable prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord Jesus, You told me to stay connected to You, as a branch stays on the vine. The branch does not make fruit by itself. It stays close, and the vine does the work. I keep trying to do it on my own. I get so busy planning and working that I forget to stay close to You. I end up trying to bear fruit after I have pulled away from You. Reattach me. The pruning hurts. You said the gardener cuts the branch that is already bearing fruit so it will bear more. I would rather grow without being touched. But You are willing to cut me to keep me. Today, hold me to the vine. I have been drifting, living on what is left instead of living on You. The sap is Yours. The fruit is Yours. The only thing I have to do is not pull away when You are holding me. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.
    John 15:4
  2. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
    John 15:5
