Parable
Parable Of The Two Sons Prayer
A short, Scripture-shaped parable prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Lord Jesus, one son said, "I will not," and then he went. The other said, "I will, sir," and then he did not. You did not praise the rude son for being rude. You praised him because he finally went to work. That is the part I need. I say yes to You in church, in prayer, in my quiet time. Then I walk away and do nothing about it. I drift. I forget. I let the yes die in my mouth. Save me from a smooth, easy kind of obedience that costs me nothing. If I have to wrestle with what You are asking, let me wrestle. But then let me go. Let me walk into the field. Let me do the next plain thing right in front of me. Better a rough yes that turns into real work than a polished yes that turns into nothing. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
