Parable

Parable Of The Friend At Midnight Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped parable prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord, the man in the story knocked at midnight. The door was shut. Everyone was asleep. It was not a good time to ask. But he knocked anyway because his friend was hungry. You told this story so I would know it is okay to come to You at the wrong time with the same need. I have been afraid to ask You twice. I thought I should be quieter, more grown-up. But this parable says the opposite. You want me to keep knocking. You are not bothered by my need. You are good, and You love me, and that is why You answer. So here I am, asking again. Someone I care about is hungry. That is the only point. Take away my shame. Give me what I need, not fancy words. Open the door. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
