Parable Of The Barren Fig Tree Prayer

A short, Scripture-shaped parable prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, in Luke 13, You tell a story about a fig tree that had no fruit for three years. The owner wanted to cut it down. That was fair. But the vinedresser stepped in. He said, Give it one more year. I will dig around it. I will care for it. And if it still does not bear, then cut it. Lord Jesus, You are that vinedresser for me. You have spoken for me when I deserved to be cut down. You bought me another season when I had nothing to show for it. I do not want to take this year for granted. I do not want to waste the chance You gave me. Dig around me, Lord. Break up the hard parts. Put in what I need. You do the work. I will receive it. Help me bear fruit this year, not to earn Your patience, but because Your kindness changes me. Let these months count. And when You look again, let You find something good on my branch. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
