New Mothers Prayer for May 1st

A short, Scripture-shaped new mothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your face is gentle and kind.

Help me look at Your face today, not just my own tired face in the mirror. You looked at people whom everyone else looked down on. You bent low to the children. You wept with those who wept. You looked at Peter with love, even when he failed.

That same face looks at me right now, in this kitchen, with dishes on the counter and spit-up on my shirt. You are not surprised by how worn out I am. You are tender. You are steady.

Let me sit under that gaze for a minute today.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
