New Mothers Prayer for January 2nd

A short, Scripture-shaped new mothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, my prayer life lately is one sentence in the dark, mumbled while the baby finishes a bottle. Paul told the church to keep on praying, and I want to, but I cannot do it the way I used to. I do not have the morning quiet, the journal, the candle. I have this rocking chair and a body that aches in my back, my arms, and my neck.

Teach me that praying is not about how long I talk to You. It is about turning my face to You. Let my tired sentences count. Let the silence between them count. Let the sound of this baby breathing count as prayer, too.

When I forget You by sundown, do not let me add shame to exhaustion. Bring me back the way You bring a child back to its mother, without lectures.

I lift this small night to You, and trust You to hold what I cannot.

Amen.
