New Mothers Prayer for January 1st

A short, Scripture-shaped new mothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, I am holding a baby and a half-cold cup of coffee, and I do not feel like a new year so much as the same long night I was already inside of. I am tired in a way that words barely reach.

You have always given Your people good things in the middle of hard roads. I am not asking for the whole promise today. I am asking for the next bite, the next hour, the small mercy of milk and quiet.

Show me that what You are bringing is not a prize for a mother who finally gets it right. It is You, with me, in this chair, in this small room, where I have not yet failed and have not yet finished anything.

Steady my hands. Let me hold this baby and receive today as it is given.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
