Grandmother’s Prayer for December 31st

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord Jesus, the year ends today. These twelve months are closing like a long feast. There has been good water along the way — sermons, prayers, friendships, the steady church year. Now, You stand on the last day and say: come to Me and drink.

The earlier waters were good. You are better. You are open today.

Lord, my thirst at the end of this year is small. I am not parched. I am tired. But the verse is for me anyway. The thirsty come. The drinker is satisfied.

Walk me through this last day of December with one more drink from Your hand. This year was full of mercies. The next year will need its own. You are the same God. The invitation is the same. I am the same believer, just one year older.

Come, You say. Drink, You say.I am coming. I am drinking.Walk me into the new year on what I receive today.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
