Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for December 28th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Paul wrote that the life I now live, I live by faith in Your Son. That means the real me is not the me I try to run on my own. It is Christ in me. Lord Jesus, this verse means more to me now than it did when I was young. My body is wearing down. The outside of me is not what it used to be. Some days my whole life feels small, like an old woman sitting in a chair. But the verse says life is still real. My flesh is small. Christ is large. That math still works. Lord, Your faith is the trellis that holds everything up. My body gets weaker. But Your faith does not get weaker with it. It is the same faith that held Paul. It is the same faith that holds someone on a deathbed. It is the same faith that holds a small grandmother on a Sunday morning in December. Walk me through this Sunday in that faith. My flesh is small. The life is Yours. The trellis holds the green. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
Verses to pray
Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.
I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.
Galatians 2:20
