Grandmother’s Prayer for December 26th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says Jesus is the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The first Adam received life. Jesus gives it. I belong to the second Adam by Your grace. The first Adam's failure is still in me by nature—the pull toward sin, the bent toward self, the weight of death. But the second Adam's life is in me too—the pull toward what is right, the bent toward love, the hope of resurrection. Both are at work in me, but the second is slowly winning by Your Spirit. Lord Jesus, this is good news, the day after Christmas. The baby born in Bethlehem was the last Adam, coming to begin the work. That work has been going on ever since. It is in me now. Your life-giving Spirit is rebuilding what the first Adam broke. The rebuilding is slow on my end. It is sure on Yours. Walk me through this day inside the last-Adam life. The first Adam’s death is being undone. The last-Adam life is the future. Old age in the last Adam is different from old age in the first. Make mine the right kind. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
