Grandmother’s Prayer for December 24th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, tonight I come back to the verse that holds the whole gospel in one sentence. For our sakes, Jesus became poor, though He was rich, so that through His poverty we might be made rich. Lord Jesus, You were born on a night like this one, in a stable, with no room at the inn. You gave up everything for us. Tonight, the family will gather around the table and the tree. The grandchildren will be loud. The great-grandchildren will be louder. The room will be full in a way it has not been for weeks. In the middle of all that noise, let this verse be its own quiet hum. You became poor so we could be rich. The greatest gift is not something we can earn or buy. It is knowing You. Walk with me through this Christmas Eve. Let the truth of that exchange land fresh in my heart again. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
