Grandmother’s Prayer for December 23rd

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Jesus said to take the lowest seat at the table so the host can invite us up. The lifting is His, not mine. Lord, the temptation in old age is quiet. I want to be honored for my years. I want my voice to count. I want the seat of respect. But You ask me to take the low seat. To wait for Your invitation. To not demand one. My honor is not at the family table. It is in You. The words “friend” and “go up higher” come from You in the end, not from any person. Today, let me take the low seat with peace. When I am passed over. When no one asks my opinion. When the room moves on without me, the honoring is Yours to give. The waiting is mine to do. Walk me through this week, content with the lower seat. The Friend who matters will say what He says. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.
    Luke 14:10
