Grandmother’s Prayer for December 21st

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, David's house was not in order when he came to the end of his life. The verse before says so. But David did not die holding his house together. He died holding Your covenant. You made it. You ordered it. You made it sure. Lord, my house is not in order either. There are shaky places in my family. There are people I am still waiting on. There are test results I cannot change. There are ordinary days that feel heavy. But Your covenant is steadier than my house. It does not shift with my circumstances. It does not break with my failures. Walk me through this Saturday the way David walked through his last days. Not standing on the state of my house, but standing on the state of Your covenant. That is the only sure ground at the end of any life. It is the ground I am happy to die on. It is the ground I want to keep living on until the day You come. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
