Grandmother’s Prayer for December 15th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, in the book of Ruth, Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth held on. Two women, same hard moment, two different choices. Lord, I have had my own Ruth-moments. The night I stayed at Bible study instead of going to the party. The day I chose to forgive instead of walking away. The afternoon I picked up the phone instead of letting the friendship fade. Each time I held on when letting go would have been easier. Father, help me cling to You today not just to good habits or old friendships, but to You and to Your promises. Hold me when I am tired. Keep me from drifting. Let me walk into this Sunday choosing to stay close to You. Make me a Ruth in my own life. Hold me fast as long as I live. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
