Grandmother’s Prayer for December 10th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Paul promised that we will be with the Lord forever. That is good news for an old woman like me. The friends I have lost here on earth — Walter, my pastor, my best friend, Marlene — are already with You. Ever. They are not waiting for me the way people on this side wait for someone slow. They are with You. Their waiting is different from mine. And one day that gap grief has carved will be closed. We will be with You too. The same You. The same presence. Together. Lord Jesus, being with You is the best part of the promise. Not new bodies. Not a new earth. Just You. That is my highest hope. Walk me through Tuesday in that hope. The thinning circle here is being made full over there. The ever begins the moment You come, or the moment You call me home. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

  1. then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever.
