Grandmother’s Prayer for December 8th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, in Revelation 3:4, You said there were a few names in Sardis who had not defiled their garments. Sardis was a church that looked dead from the outside. But You knew the few who stayed clean. You knew each one by name. Lord Jesus, that verse has been a comfort to me in hard seasons. I have seen churches split. I have watched people I love walk away from faith. It can look discouraging. But You still know the few names. You still see the ones who are trying to stay clean. Today, let me trust You with the count. I do not have to know all the names. I only have to keep my own garment clean, by Your grace. And I can pray for the few names I do know. The widow downstairs, who still comes to church alone. The young mother who works two jobs and still teaches Sunday school. The pastor's wife at the small, struggling church across town. Each one is faithful in her own Sardis. Bless them today. Make me a faithful few-name in my small Sardis. The Lord knows each one. The honor is real, even if the world does not record it. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
