Grandmother’s Prayer for November 24th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You promised in Isaiah 33:21 that You would be like broad rivers and streams to us. Rivers so wide no enemy can cross them. A safe and refreshing place, all at once. Lord, this verse has steadied me through small seasons. The years of caring for Walter when the world shrank to the kitchen and the bedroom. The COVID year when even church was on a screen. The cancer year when my horizon was the next appointment. In each season, You were wider than my circumstances. Your presence was bigger than the walls of my hours. Lord, my world this week is small. Three meals, three short walks, two phone calls, a few hours of prayer and reading. But You are a wide river around this small life. You are wider than the world. You are wider than the walls. You are wider than my fears. Today, let the wideness of Your presence make the smallness of my circumstances feel safe, not cramped. The river is around me. Your defense is real. Your refreshment is poured out. Walk me through Wednesday inside Your wide protection. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
