Grandmother’s Prayer for November 13th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, John 15:4 says the branch cannot bear fruit on its own. That verse is simple, and uncomfortable. Apart from the vine, the branch does nothing. The fruit is not the branch's work. It is the vine's. Lord, I have spent years quietly believing I was the one making the fruit, with You as a helpful supporter. But the verse turns that around. I am the branch. You are the vine. The fruit is Yours, flowing through the branch. That truth humbles me, and it frees me, both at once. Lord Jesus, the branch's job is to abide. To stay attached. To not pull away in pride. To not pull away in despair. The abiding is my part. The fruit is Your business. At my age, after decades of trying to be a productive branch, I am ready to take the verse at its word. Today, let me simply abide. Let me stay in the chair with the open Bible. Let me stay in the relationship through the hard phone call. Let me stay in the prayer for the grandchildren. The fruit, if any, is Yours. The staying is mine. The branch that abides bears fruit because of the vine, not because of the branch. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.
    John 15:4
