Grandmother’s Prayer for November 12th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says the trial of my faith is more precious than gold tested in fire. I have been through some of those fires. The miscarriage. The diagnosis. The widowhood. The years of distance from my brother. Each one was a furnace. And each one, when it was over, left me with a piece of faith I did not have before. Smaller. Harder. More refined. I would not have called it precious at the time. But I might call it that now, looking back. Lord, the fires of this season are not as hot as the old ones. The slow loss of hearing. The friend whose mind is fading. The granddaughter who feels far away. These are smaller furnaces. But they are still doing Your refining work. Let these days produce in me what the older trials produced. A faith that is small but pure. A faith that does not snap under pressure. A faith that, when You return, will bring You joy. Trial me kindly. Refine me without burning me. Use these small fires for Your precious work. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

  1. that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes, even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—
