Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for November 7th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, You said in Isaiah 49:16 that You have carved my name on the palms of Your hands. That picture stays with me. The hands that made the world bear my name. The hands that hold the universe have my name on them. Even the hands lifted up on the cross had my name there. Lord Jesus, those wounds are part of the writing. The cross is what it cost to carve my name there. The rising again is what makes it last forever. Neither one has been undone. This verse has been my anchor through the lonely stretches. Through widowhood. Through seasons when the children did not call. Through dry Sundays at church. Through quiet houses. It does not let me believe I am forgotten. The name on Your hands is mine. The name on Your hands is also the name of every one of my children and grandchildren who belong to You. I do not have to fight for my place. That was settled in the carving. Walk me through this Thursday, sure of that. Forgotten by some? Maybe. Not by You. Your hands have my name. Your hands are not going to lose me. Amen.

- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
