Grandmother’s Prayer for October 31st

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says, “Renew a right spirit within me.” I cannot make that happen by myself. It is Your work inside me. My spirit gets tired. The right one wears at the edges. The wrong one sneaks in without my noticing. I become slightly sour. Slightly anxious. Slightly self-protective. Lord, renew the right spirit in me this morning. I cannot manufacture it. I can ask for it. I am asking. Take the slightly worn edges of my patience and freshen them. Take the slightly worn corners of my trust and freshen them. Take this slightly worn heart that has been carrying autumn’s small weights and freshen it. The right spirit was always Your gift. Give it again. Quietly renew me before the day starts asking for me. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
