Grandmother’s Prayer for October 28th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Lord Jesus, You said in John 15:19 that You chose me out of the world. The choice was Yours. It was done long ago. Father, I have spent years trying to keep one foot in the world's approval. I wanted to be liked by women who do not believe and by women who do. I wanted the secular crowd to think I was wise. I wanted the church crowd to think I was wise, too. But the verse tells me I no longer belong to the world's approval. I belong to You. Lord, at this age, the world is not chasing after me. It is busy with the young and the influential. A grandmother in a small apartment is not what the world is looking for. But that is freedom, not loss. I do not have to bid for a place at the world's table. There is no place for me there anymore. The place You chose for me is enough. Let me serve there. Today, the chosen-out life is the only one open to me. It is also the only one I want. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
    John 15:19
