Grandmother’s Prayer for October 26th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, You spoke through Haggai: we looked for much, and it came to little, and when we brought it home, You blew on it. That word cuts, Lord. Your people had been busy with their own houses and not building Yours. Their work did not give them what they hoped for.
I have had my own smaller seasons like that. Times I worked hard at something — a relationship, a habit, a project — and it did not produce what I wanted. Lord, show me where I have been looking in the wrong direction.
In this past year, where have I looked for much and found little? The energy I spent worrying about my family — did it produce what I hoped? The hours I gave to news and politics — did they produce? The time I gave to small comforts and routine — did they produce? Some of those things may have had Your breath blown on them.
Help me see plainly where my house has gotten too much of my attention and Yours not enough. Then turn my heart back. This word is not cruel. It is kind and corrective. Walk me through this week with Your house at the top of my list, and the smaller things in their right place underneath.
Amen.
