Grandmother’s Prayer for October 21st

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says the love of Christ constrains us. It presses in. It compels. It is not background music. It is the engine that moves me forward.

Lord, the engines I have used to get through this life have been many. Duty. Habit. The need to be useful to my family. The desire to be a good Christian woman. Each has had its day. None has lasted the way Your love lasts.

The duty wears out. The habit weakens. The need to be useful gets harder as the years go by. But Your love does not wear out. It still presses today.

It is what gets me up to make the phone call. It is what keeps me from canceling the visit. It is what makes me pray for the difficult cousin rather than roll my eyes.

Constrain me with that love today. Let the engine be Yours. I will let the other engines idle.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
