Grandmother’s Prayer for October 7th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, in Numbers 11:11, Moses asked You plainly: “Why have You afflicted Your servant?” The Bible does not edit it out. You did not strike him dead for asking. That honest complaint was part of the relationship. Lord, there have been times in this long life when I have asked something close to Moses' question. After the miscarriage. After long lean years of illness. After certain church hurts, I have not always asked it as openly as Moses. I have buried it in polite prayers. But this verse tells me I can be more direct with You. Lord, the asking is not faithlessness. It is the relationship that is honest. And the verse is not the end of the conversation. Moses asked. You answered. You also kept using him. The complaint did not disqualify him. Today, let me bring the complaint I have been swallowing — the one about the slow decline of my hearing, the one about the way the years are speeding up, the one I have not said out loud yet. Bring it out into the open. Hand it over. Then trust You with the answer. Not demand. Just trust. Moses got an answer. I will wait for Yours, in Your time, in Your way. Honesty is the right place to start. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
